PROBLEM IN ONE SENTENCE:
There is a big challenge to monitor smart-watch wearer’s body temperature as accurate as with a regular medical thermometer.
HOW BIG IS THE PROBLEM:
Current smartwatches do not offer any accurate means of body temperature measurement which is one of the main symptoms to many illnesses, for example – Covid-19. Not having an accurate body temperature measurement ready when necessary is potentially harmful to health.
WHOSE PROBLEM IS IT:
As an accurate body temperature measurement is widely used as a primary check for illness in medical and household environments, this is a widespread problem.
POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:
As of today, there are solutions for temperature measurement using thermocouples, infra-red light, thermistors and so on. None of these work because of watch’s placement on the body.
POSSIBLE LIMITATIONS:
Wrist’s temperature is lower than the general body, is inconsistent, because of multiple factors (wrists generally hang out in the open and get cold air more often than other body parts, generally used for body temperature measurements). Current technology, without an adaptive algorithm, does not give accurate enough results.
