PROBLEM IN ONE SENTENCE:
Thousands kilos of coffee grounds discarded with total waste from coffee shops and other catering places as well offices and homes.
HOW BIG IS THE PROBLEM:
Just in Vero Café coffee bar chain life we are using at least 500 kilos of coffee grounds per month. For now all these ground is disposed of with general household waste. We are ready to be sorted separately for secondary use. The problem is organizing picking, storage and new product of secondary use from all the places coffee ground on daily or every second day base.
WHOSE PROBLEM IS IT:
Coffee ground waste is available for a fairly wide range of applications such as:
as organic fertilizers for farming;
new materials from coffee grounds;
extract energy by burning;
Today there are many information for home using coffee ground with small quantities. As well there were small initiatives in Lithuania there we take part just quite short term. The goal is to create a permanent circuit from collection to second use of coffee ground benefits.
A lot of research has been done (by universities, big corporations ect) without a considerable improvement. Limitation is logistic, quick drying of the grounds not to begin fermentation.
